HEALTH REPORT
Purpose of the health report: Our class conducted several experiments on each neighborhood we live in. Each experiment helped toward showing environmental injustice in each neighborhood. For example, if one neighborhood isn’t as healthy as another, we can work towards figuring out what society can help out with. These experiments consisted of air pollution quality, amounts of trash in areas, grocery store food standards, sound disruptions, and more. Each of these can show us the health levels of each of our neighborhoods. I hoped to gain more knowledge about the air pollution and trash pollution in my community. I was curious to see the condition of the neighborhood I go home to everyday. Abstract: My group did two experiments, trash pollution and air pollution. We were curious to see how much trash gets littered around our homes. Each of us went to three different places to count trash, our block, the nearest park, and the nearest busy parking lot. We would walk ~100 square feet and count every piece of waste we saw. Once the data was collected we brought it back to class and compared each neighborhood by putting it into a table and graph. The neighborhoods we used were Mission Valley, Clairmont, Sherman Heights, North Park, University City, City Heights, and Spring Valley. We found University City was the cleanest and Clairmont had the most trash. For our air pollution experiment we took a square of bendable plastic, rubbed vaseline on one side of it, and hung it up in a front yard that is exposed to the road. We collected the data from our group and whoever else that did the experiment in our two classes, which meant we got data from Mission Valley, Clairmont, Sherman Heights, University City, North Park, Kearny Mesa, Spring Valley, La Mesa, Logan Heights, Paradise Hills, Allied Gardens, National City, and City Heights. After collecting this data we compared and put it into a table and graph. We found out Mission Valley (my neighborhood) had the lowest air pollution dust particles out of all the neighborhoods. South Park, Barrio Logan, Mission Valley, and Clairmont had the least amount of yellowness in their air quality. The average in air pollution dust particles for all neighborhoods is around 2.6 and for yellowness average is around 1.5.
